Discovering Lithuania’s Uncharted Territories: Anykščiai and Biržai

3rd July 2025

An invitation from the local tourism board this April to explore the beautiful Anykščiai and Biržai regions of Lithuania was an offer we simply couldn’t refuse. These places offer rich history, stunning natural experiences, and surprising culinary discoveries.

Our adventure began in charming Anykščiai. One of the most vivid experiences was definitely visiting the Narrow-Gauge Railway Museum    and taking a train ride. This unique cultural heritage boasts centuries of history and allows you to experience a true journey through time. Climbing into the old carriages and enjoying the 12 km journey to Lake Rubikiai, you could feel the spirit of the region and revel in the beautiful nature, as this landscape is often called Lithuania’s own Switzerland.

The Anykščiai region hides true gems, and one of my absolute favorites was Palaima . It’s a genuine oasis of relaxation and nature near Anykščiai, offering wonderful accommodation and picturesque surroundings – an ideal spot for unwinding and enjoying nature.

And just nearby is the Lithuanian wine producer –Anykščių vynas  . This is one of Lithuania’s oldest and largest beverage producers, with a history dating back to 1926. Their wines, often made from local berries and fruits, are simply unbelievably good, and best of all – the prices are truly affordable!

An Adventure Through Trees and Into History

For nature lovers, The Treetop Walking Path The Treetop Walking Path   in Anykščiai is an absolute must. This is the first path of its kind in the Baltic States, taking you on a 300-meter journey through the tree canopies, rising to a height of 21 meters. From the 35-meter observation tower, panoramic views of the Anykščiai Forest and the winding curves of the Šventoji River are simply breathtaking – a truly exhilarating experience!

Biržai – A City of Fortresses and History

From Anykščiai, our road led us to Biržai, where Biržai Castle  awaited. This is one of Northern Europe’s best-preserved Renaissance-Baroque style bastion fortresses and the first of its kind in Lithuania, built in the Italian style. The castle complex now houses a museum, offering a deep dive into the region’s history and the significant role of the Swedish Wars here.

This trip to Anykščiai and Biržai was full of memorable moments and proved once again that Lithuania is a destination that offers something for everyone – be it the beauty of nature, the depth of history, or unexpected culinary delights. If you’re looking for new and inspiring destinations, Anykščiai and Biržai are waiting for you!
